What's your specific experience?
You not only need to make sure any plastic surgeons you are considering have general experience in the field of cosmetic surgery, you need to also be sure they've performed your specific procedure plenty of times in the past. You should be more than happy to let others be the guinea pigs for newer doctors. You want someone who is very comfortable with their craft. Don't worry about being rude or forward. This is your health and appearance you're talking about.
Where will it take place?
This is a question most plastic surgeons will address even before you bring it up, but in case they don't, you may want to ask. Some doctors prefer to do their procedures in their own clinic, meaning there's no surprise to the patient. You don't want to sign up for the procedure and then realize much later that it will be taking place in a hospital three cities away.
Do you have hospital privileges?
There are a few good reasons for asking this question and being interested in the answer. The most obvious reason is that it gives you the additional confidence that your hospital, with very strict rules and regulations about who they allow to perform operations, has trusted confidence in the doctor you're considering. Another is to simply know that if something goes wrong, whether in your surgery or in recovery, that your doctor can continue to be there for your continued care. While this is an unlikely scenario, it never hurts to cover all the bases.
What are the risks?
Any cosmetic procedure is going to carry with it some risks to your health. While most plastic surgeons will (rightfully) play down these risks, you are entitled to know they exist and what they are. If your doctor isn't forthcoming about them, ask directly. View any attempt to hide known risks as a major red flag.
